S.A.S.T.M (a David Graston Soft Tissue Technique)

What is S.A.S.T.M?
It stands for Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization and it was created by David Graston who also developed the Graston Technique. SASTM is method that detects and treats soft tissue restrictions, scar tissue and chronic inflammation. Instruments effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. It is most effectively used for the restoration of function and the reduction of pain. Treatment is combined with massage and joint mobilization (chiropractic adjusting of the area) stretching and strengthening. This protocol is designed to provide clients with optimal results in a minimal number of treatments and to restore patients to their pre-injury level of activity. SASTM instruments and technique appear to be the next generation in soft-tissue rehabilitation.

How does it work?
These instruments where designed with the ability to locate restrictions through sound waves like a stethoscope. The therapist can treat the affected area with more precision. This therapy causes a controlled micro trauma and the stimulation of a local mild inflammatory response. This form of treatment initiates reabsorption of inappropriate fibrosis or excessive scar tissue and causes a cascade of healing activities resulting in remodeling of the affected soft tissue structures. Adhesions within the soft tissue which may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, or repeated strain, are broken down allowing full functional restoration to occur. Clients should expect after treatments to have some of the following: piticia (redness to skin like a bruise) and soreness.

What is scar tissues problem?
Scar tissue limits range of motion, and in many instances causes pain, which prevents the clients from functioning the same as they did prior to the injury or incident. Normal functioning tissue runs in the same direction, for instance, with tendons and ligaments. This allows for proper biomechanical movement. Scar tissue runs in multiple directions and restricts proper movement or very often causes pain. SASTM gently breaks up scar tissue which forces the body to re-heal with new tissue in an organized manner thus preventing knots and tender areas in the body.
